Solar panel maintenance guide for Scotland

What you actually need to do to keep solar panels in Scotland running at peak output — and what's marketing.

The truth about cleaning

Scottish rainfall is more than enough to keep most panels operating above 95% of theoretical output. Cleaning provides a measurable benefit only on near-flat roofs (under 15° pitch), in dusty rural areas, near major roads, or close to coastal salt spray — common around the Forth, Clyde and east-coast harbours. When you do clean, use deionised water and a soft telescopic brush; never a pressure washer, never a wet ladder, and never a snow shovel.

Inverter lifetime

String inverters typically need replacement at 12–15 years (£700–£1,400 fitted). Hybrid inverters work harder and often last 10–12 years (£900–£1,800). Microinverters carry 25-year warranties and rarely need touching. Assume one replacement across the 25-year panel life for planning purposes.

Panel degradation

Modern N-type panels degrade at around 0.35–0.4% per year, retaining 85–88% of original output at year 25. Older mono-PERC modules run closer to 0.5%/year. HJT modules from Aiko and REC are the current class leaders, with published year-25 warranties at 88–92% of nameplate.

Battery lifetime

LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries from GivEnergy, Tesla, BYD and Sungrow are warrantied for 10–15 years and 6,000–10,000 full cycles. Expect 70–80% of original usable capacity at end of warranty. LFP chemistry is thermally stable and Scottish garage or utility-room temperatures suit it well — no active cooling required.

25-year cost of ownership — an honest budget

Beyond the install itself, what does a Scottish solar system actually cost to own? Here's a realistic plan for a 4kWp + 5kWh battery install:

When generation drops — a five-minute diagnosis

The most common call to installers is "my generation is down". Before you pick up the phone, work through this:

  1. Compare like with like. Open the inverter app and check the same month last year, not last week. June vs January comparisons are meaningless.
  2. Check the string voltage. If a single string is dead in the middle of a sunny day, you have a tripped DC isolator or a broken connector — 80% of "faults" are here.
  3. Look at the roof from the garden. New moss on the lower panels? A neighbour's tree that's grown 2m? Pigeon debris across the array? All visible from ground level.
  4. Check the inverter error log. "Grid overvoltage" trips (often around midday in summer) are a DNO issue — your installer notifies SPEN or SSEN, who adjust the network voltage.
  5. Test the generation meter reading against the app. If they diverge, the meter or the CT clamp has drifted — installer visit needed.

If none of the above explains a 20%+ drop, call your installer — most MCS contractors offer a fixed-fee (£140–£220) diagnostic visit.

Monitoring apps — what to actually look at

  • SolarEdge mySolarEdge. Panel-level view is the killer feature — a single underperforming module shows up in seconds. Set an alert for "generation 20% below expected" and forget the rest.
  • GivEnergy Cloud. Battery-focused. The daily energy flow diagram is the most useful screen; the "self-sufficiency" widget tells you whether your tariff/battery strategy is working.
  • Fronius Solar.web. Best-in-class historical data — 10-minute resolution retained indefinitely. Overkill for casual use, essential if you're optimising.
  • Enphase Enlighten. Panel-level monitoring on microinverter systems. The web dashboard is far more useful than the mobile app.
  • Sungrow iSolarCloud. Solid daily/monthly reporting; battery scheduling UI is the weakest of the majors.

Whichever brand you own, check the app once a week for the first month, once a month for the first year, then quarterly. Alerts do the work for you after that.

Annual owner checklist (10 minutes)

  • Compare 12-month generation to the previous year's total
  • Visual check of DC isolator and cabling from ground level
  • Trim vegetation now shading the array (especially neighbouring trees)
  • Review SEG payments and switch tariffs if a better rate exists
  • Check inverter firmware update notifications
  • Confirm the buildings insurance schedule still lists the PV system

Insurance

Most UK home insurers cover solar PV under standard buildings cover; a few (Direct Line, Aviva) ask for a phone notification post-install. Confirm with your insurer at handover — never assume. Batteries are almost always covered but should be declared. Standalone specialist policies exist but are rarely necessary.

End of life — WEEE and recycling

Solar panels are classified as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in the UK. Manufacturers are obliged to fund take-back through PV Cycle UK; most Scottish installers will collect and recycle a decommissioned system for £15–£40 per panel. Silicon, glass and aluminium recovery rates now exceed 90%. Lithium batteries go through separate authorised routes — never to landfill and never to a general electrical recycling centre without pre-notification.
